From the perspective of the young adult he was then, Francisco Jiménez describes the challenges he faced in his efforts to continue his education. During his college years, the very family solidarity that allowed Francisco to survive as a child is tested. Not only must he leave his family behind when he goes to Santa Clara University, but while Francisco is there, his father abandons the family and returns to Mexico.
This is the story of how Francisco coped with poverty, with his guilt over leaving his family financially strapped, with his self-doubt about succeeding academically, and with separation. Once again his telling is honest, true, and inspiring.

Francisco Jimenez's trilogy should be a mandatory reading in all elementary schools. When I bought the first book, I literally couldn't put it down, reading into the night. Later, I couldn't wait until the next two arrived. The hardship this family went through and the love they shared brought me to tears. While some people are concerned with what they will eat for the next meal other people are concerned with the next iPhone version. The society is becoming more and more shallow, ignorant and narrow minded and that is the reason why this should be a mandatory reading in schools.Product details

Reaching Out (Audible Audio Edition) Francisco Jiménez Adrian Vargas Audible Studios Books Reviews
His story tells so much of how many of our migrant familes suffer to earn their living wages
Great read; I have read all four books by this author.
Great read. I used this title with my ELD class. Very inspirational story.
I am white and was raised in a small-town fairly homogeneous community. My parents had a stable marriage and I was lucky enough to have two great siblings. Fransisco Jimenez only similarity with me is a loving family. His description of his college years is the third in a trilogy that, though fictional, closely parallels the struggles Jimenez faced. It is was both inspirational and honest. It also showed me much of a world I had previously not known. It is an easy, but important read.
This is the final book of Francisco Jiménez's autobiographical trilogy, a coming-of-age story about his escape from the grinding poverty of his migrant farm laborer family. The first two books are The Circuit, about his early childhood; and Breaking Out, about his junior high and high school years. I recommend all three books. I had bought the books in both English and Spanish for my daughter, who is a 6th grade student in a bilingual immersion school. I don't speak Spanish, and I wanted the English version so that I could follow along and maybe try to read some of the Spanish as well with an English translation at hand.
These books are a poignant look at a hard-working migrant family in California. Jimenez, the second-born of 6 children, is a brilliant and hard-working student who managed to graduate high school with honors and then manages to find a way to go to college as well -- the first in his family to attain this goal. These books are worth reading just for the sheer cussedness and determination he had to have to overcome his family's struggles. One of the most powerful parts is when he considers leaving school to help his family financially after they have a major setback, and a Jesuit professor at his college convinces him to stay and continue to excel in school, which will be a bigger help in the future. I'm glad to have read this moving story and would happily read another follow-up book about his subsequent doctoral work at Columbia and his ensuing career as a college professor and writer.
Part of a trilogy about an illegal child and his family - very pertinent to my students who are in the same boat!! Working on becoming US citizens - human beings.
This book is a must read for everyone. It tells the story of a family's struggle to integrate in the American society. It is a story of struggle and triumph. But in spite of it all they never gave up, there is a lot we can learn from them. The most important lesson to bear in mind is that behind every dark cloud there is a silver lining.
